  2. I am a member of the church, have been since birth. I have served a mission and served in Bishoprics. So my comments don’t come as an attacker of the church. But, I had to stop reading after the paragraph about the “theories” on how to accept these translations.
Theory one tries to side step the fact that all the materials we do have proof of show absolutely zero correct translations. We even have handwritten proof of J.S. and others trying to “divine” hieroglyphs, that he then said were the missing sections of the picture.
Theory two requires dismissing everything we do have, and saying the correct translation must have come from materials we don’t have. This is what we believed prior to getting proof the translation was wrong.
Theory three: “The third theory does have some validity. Doctrine & Covenants Section 7 is a translation of ancient writing that Joseph only saw in vision, so it’s possible the Book of Abraham was produced in similar manner. However, Joseph at least thought that he was translating the papyrus in his possession.” REALLY? The only way to believe that J.S. translated scripture of Abraham, with which we are to grow closer to God, is to accept that J.S. couldn’t tell if he was translating the paper in front of him or if he was receiving new revelation from God, via the Spirit? So J.S. has grown so close to God that he no longer needs “seer stones” but now can’t tell that the paper in front of him is irrelevant? Sorry, I need a God who can speak to his Prophet more than any of these theories allow for. After all, how many times do we have lessons about prophets where we show the prophet on top of the wall, and use this image to teach that prophets have more direct awareness of God’s will?
The Spirit helps us know truth. The Spirit is telling me that only the most difficult mental gymnastics are required to make these theories work. I so so wish more existed to believe. Faith is required in all things, but God is a God of order, not magic.
    Thanks.

  3. It’s too bad you stopped there. It sounds like you hold some of the assumptions the book was intended to correct. You might find it a helpful read.
