1 thought on “A “Mormon” By Any Other Name

  1. In Mosiah 18, the prophet Mormon recounts the organization by Alma of the Church of Christ in a place called Mormon, where Alma baptized the people into the church in the Waters of Mormon. Later on when introducing his first hand account, Mormon affirms he was named for this place, but in this chapter he rhapsodizes about the importance of Mormon as the place where the Church of Christ was established among the Nephites. Here Mormon the prophet identifies the place Mormon with the Church of Christ. Thus, for its chief author and editor, “Mormon” means “the Church of Jesus Christ”. Just as “Melchizedek” was adopted by the Lord as a shorthand for “the holy priesthood after the order of the Sun of God”, the name “Mormon” refers to the Church of Jesus Christ established among the Nephites in anticipation of Christ’s life and atoning sacrifice.
