  1. Thanks. I’ve been very slightly troubled by the fact that the two most recent sets of changes to the Endowment ceremony were not there all along, but your article helps explain why.

  2. I have gotten some questions and comments about this subject via FaceBook, so I am really glad I read this. One tiny critique: You do not cite which volume of Doctrines of Salvation from which you drew the Joseph Fielding Smith quote.

  3. Joseph said: “Ordinances instituted in the heavens before the foundation of the world, in the priesthood, for the salvation of men, are not to be altered or changed. All must be saved on the same principles.” I have been a member of the church for over 50 years and I have seen multiple changes to the temple initiatories and the endowment. If Joseph said there were to be no alterations or changes, why are they suddenly allowed?

In Isaiah chapter 24 the prophet said: “The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.” He seems to link the transgressing of the law and changing of the ordinance to the covenant being broken and the earth being cursed. Do we really want the covenant to be broken and the earth cursed?

  4. Joseph changed the ordinance of Baptism for the dead while he was still living. He first allowed men to be baptized for women and vice versa. Eventually, the Lord let him know that that was incorrect; and he changed that practice to only allowing men to be proxies for men and women to be proxies for women. These and other Temple Ordinances and proceedures have been a work in progress ever since.
