  1. It is good to see this review. I have already heard from contacts that have had good things to say about it. May it serve as a caution to all not to automatically accept the conclusions of allegedly “big name” academics when referencing divine methods for the creation of scripture.

Personally, I find this item offensive, relating to “translation”:

Givens states that “it might be better defined in Smith’s case as the ongoing task of transmitting and assembling an earthly counterpart to an original, heavenly urtext, prompted by whatever oracular devices and textual fragments were at hand to catalyze, inspire, or trigger his prophetic imagination.” [7] He applies that to the translation of the gold plates, the Bible, and the Egyptian papyri.”

The idea that we sustain as the word of God in General Conference as a Church items coming from Joseph’s alleged “prophetic imagination” is to me sacrilegious. From D&C 128:18: “I might have rendered a plainer translation to this, but it is sufficiently plain to suit my purpose as it stands” I gather that Joseph Smith knew exactly what the word “translate” meant and that there are degrees or variations in the process. Also that he was to give (write/publish) what the Spirit of the Lord constrained him to send forth. The doctrine of the Restored Church of Jesus Christ is not Joseph’s, but God’s restored through Joseph. He was the inspired prophetic conduit, not the originator; there is no such thing as “Smithian” doctrine.

For Moroni to be given the keys to the stick of Ephriam (BofM) and build a stone box to deposit the plates and interpreters in and show it to Joseph in vision and warn Joseph to take great care of the whole project tells me that Joseph was not catalyzed to receive an urtext by revelation or imagination. I hope this kind of theorizing does not gain traction. I am pleased Trevor points out that such is not how Joseph viewed it.
“And he has translated the book, even that part which I have commanded him, and as your Lord and your God liveth it is true.” (D&C 17:6)
I allow for the possibility that Joseph might have received the BofA by direct revelation instead of translating an Egyptian papyrus in his possession only because an Apostle also allowed for it: “Is the book of Abraham true? Yes, but it is not complete; it stops almost midair. Would that the Prophet had gone on in his translation or revelation, as the case may be.” (McConkie, “The Doctrinal Restoration”)
The “or revelation” allows for a direct revelation rather than a translation in this BofA instance. I think the church essay allows for that as well as an option, though not the preferred understanding.
Again, I appreciate this fine review and it will receive much thoughtful consideration.

  2. I should have mentioned President Nelson’s October 2017 General Conference talk in the review, but had forgotten about it until today. It contains the statement that “The full power of the gospel of Jesus Christ is contained in the Book of Mormon. Period.” The entire talk is worth reviewing, but this section applies here in particular:

“My dear brothers and sisters, I testify that the Book of Mormon is truly the word of God. It contains the answers to life’s most compelling questions. It teaches the doctrine of Christ. It expands and clarifies many of the ‘plain and precious’ truths that were lost through centuries of time and numerous translations of the Bible.

“The Book of Mormon provides the fullest and most authoritative understanding of the Atonement of Jesus Christ to be found anywhere. It teaches what it really means to be born again. From the Book of Mormon we learn about the gathering of scattered Israel. We know why we are here on earth. These and other truths are more powerfully and persuasively taught in the Book of Mormon than in any other book. The full power of the gospel of Jesus Christ is contained in the Book of Mormon. Period.

“The Book of Mormon both illuminates the teachings of the Master and exposes the tactics of the adversary. The Book of Mormon teaches true doctrine to dispel false religious traditions—such as the erroneous practice of performing infant baptisms. The Book of Mormon gives purpose to life by urging us to ponder the potential of eternal life and ‘never-ending happiness.’ The Book of Mormon shatters the false beliefs that happiness can be found in wickedness and that individual goodness is all that is required to return to the presence of God. It abolishes forever the false concepts that revelation ended with the Bible and that the heavens are sealed today.”

  3. __Excellent review Trevor. I was very suspicious of this title coming from Givens. Your review gave me the information I needed to confirm my suspicions. Saved some bucks. I’ve spent too much on Givens’. I’m always more disappointed than enlightened.
__ Richard Bushman knows how to make an impeccably objective presentation that satisfies both sides. I’d rather LDS authors just presented the facts but if they’re going for secular acclaim, they’ll have to learn from Bushman how to do it.
__Givens thinks he can get away with pretending to be objective by taking all the shortcuts Bushman identified and committed to avoid in Rough Stone Rolling. Among the most egregious is Givens’ use of pejorative phrases like “doctrinal fount of the gospel Smith developed”. Uh, no Terryl. We ain’t Catholics. They know their guy doesn’t actually channel anything extra-natural so you’re free to describe them as “developing” their church’s “theology”. Our guy is the real deal. Yeah, we’re all scholars here. But we also have testimonies too. You can’t say Joseph Smith had “revelatory imagination” and get my sale. Go read Bushman’s preface and follow his rules.
__”Smith” (another show of feigned objectivity) was exactly who he said he was and he restored some plain and precious parts via the Books of Moses and Abraham–or it’s time to book a spot on mormonstories.
__You cannot treat the work of The Prophet like the embarrassing abortion of a first-time amateur translator when there is clearly insufficient evidence and expect us to continue to patronize your work.
__We want the truth in the form of quality scholarship Terryl. We’re not stupid, we know when an LDS author is being biased or subjective and we can mitigate for ourselves. Please stop the clumsy double-agent pandering.

  4. P.S. Came here to see if the book was worth getting. Instead bought a Kindle copy of Gee’s book. Got exactly what I was looking for.
