  1. I, the Lord, stretched out the heavens, and built the earth, my very handiwork; and all things therein are mine. And it is my purpose to provide for my saints, for all things are mine. But it must needs be done in mine own way; and behold this is the way that I, the Lord, have decreed to provide for my saints, that the poor shall be exalted, in that the rich are made low. For the earth is full, and there is enough and to spare; yea, I prepared all things, and have given unto the children of men to be agents unto themselves. (Doctrine & Covenants 104:14-17) What does it mean that the poor shall be exalted, in that the rich are made low? Doesn’t seem like that is the standard in todays society.

  2. Indeed this is not the standard in today’s society, but it is the commandment from God:

16 Wo unto you rich men, that will not give your substance to the poor, for your riches will canker your souls; and this shall be your lamentation in the day of visitation, and of judgment, and of indignation: The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and my soul is not saved!
17 Wo unto you poor men, whose hearts are not broken, whose spirits are not contrite, and whose bellies are not satisfied, and whose hands are not stayed from laying hold upon other men’s goods, whose eyes are full of greediness, and who will not labor with your own hands!
18 But blessed are the poor who are pure in heart, whose hearts are broken, and whose spirits are contrite, for they shall see the kingdom of God coming in power and great glory unto their deliverance; for the fatness of the earth shall be theirs.
19 For behold, the Lord shall come, and his recompense shall be with him, and he shall reward every man, and the poor shall rejoice; (Doctrine & Covenants 56)

Caring for the poor (both the poor in spirit and the poor in is a critically important aspect of discipleship, but I believe God wants it to be given freely by each individual and received with gratitude, not a sense of entitlement. This is one of the fundamental pillars upon which a Zion society is built. This talk from Elder Renlund touches on the physical and spiritual ramifications of this principle. When Alma the Younger saw the inequality among his people, he gave up his political position and went among the people to teach them. See Alma 4:11-15.

Zion societies get this right, and there is no poor among them. (See 4 Nephi 1:3 and Moses 7:18.)
