Keith Erekson is an award-winning author, teacher, and public historian who has published on topics including politics, hoaxes, Abraham Lincoln, Elvis Presley, and Church history. He grew up in Baltimore, served a mission in Brazil, and earned advanced degrees in history and business. He works for the Church History Department in efforts to encourage outreach and historical engagement.

I would like to provide some candid feedback to the speaker. I really enjoyed his presentation, but I felt he undermined the entire presentation with the example that he shared at the end. He said a relative of his posted something stupid on social media and that he was able to verify that it was false by spending five seconds on Google. I thought the whole point of the presentation was that you can’t trust everything that you hear and that you have to put in some effort and some analytical thinking to verify what you hear. He certainly didn’t follow his own advice when he concluded his relative’s post was false by spending five seconds on Google. In fact, what one finds after spending five seconds on Google seems quintessentially unverified.
