  1. I really enjoy reading your insights. I don’t need these rebuttals to bolster my testimony, but they do add to my testimony, to what I already fervently believe. Thank you for your great labour and effort and your willingness to share.

  2. I think it’s interesting that the two early church leaders quoted, Kimball and Ballard, have names that could be easily confused with more contemporary leaders. It’s probably nothing but the potential is there.

  3. I’ve done a lot of reading on Freemasonry lately, especially the “exposes” which came out to great sensationalism in the early 1800s. The more I learn about Freemasonry, the less it resembles the Endowment at any point in its history in the Restoration.

Our Sacrament meetings begin with some announcements, a hymn from a hymnbook (accompanied by an organ when available) and a prayer. It ends with a hymn and a prayer. The format isn’t unique to Latter-day Saints; it’s a format that was in wide use by other denominations at the time, and it certainly seemed to be (and has continued to be) a useful format for Sunday worship services.

In much the same way, Joseph borrowed some elements of the format of Freemason ceremonies in order to convey a covenant-laden narrative (which itself has never borne any resemblance to the Masonic narrative) because that seemed like a useful format.
