  2. The story of Sherem was my first hint as a young reader that the descendants of Lehi’s party were not the only people in the Promised Land.
    My second hint came when I learned about the rate of growth of hunter-gatherer societies vs agricultural societies. The Lamanite population explosion could only occur as they joined/conquered other civilizations.
    From my youth I’ve struggled with the idea that the people of the Book of Mormon colonized the whole of the America. The finding of no middle eastern DNA among the major native American tribes was actually a confirmation of my learning as a younger man. I love the Book of Mormon more than ever.
