  1. I like the idea. The toughest example of this idea of clinging to false traditions or otherwise not fully accepting truth is the race based priesthood and temple ban, because it isn’t an example of individuals rejecting part of what the church teaches, but it is the church itself (leaders and members) who clung to their false beliefs about race.

Many an apologist has said that it doesn’t really matter that the church clung to false beliefs about race. God’s grace, they say, is sufficient to redeem everyone harmed by the church’s stubbornness. To me, that begins to contradict what you are saying here — that it is important to embrace all truth and discard false traditions.

Of course, my comment wouldn’t be important without implications for me in the 21st century. When I consider the example of the priesthood and temple ban, I wonder if there are false traditions that the church is clinging to today. If there are, does God want me to conform to those false traditions, because conformity to what the church teaches is more important than embracing truth? Or maybe God wants me to be a buffet member, rejecting beliefs and practices that my sense of right and wrong tells me are wrong?

In many ways, this is the central issue in my own faith crisis. This is part of my struggle to figure out what my on-going relationship with the church will look like.
