  1. Jim,
Thanks for all you have done! I love your work and your desire to help others. I have not watched the podcast and not even sure I will but I admire that you did this. This is a huge issue right now as you know, and we are just seeing the beginning of something that will affect all in the church someday. I am aware of Bill’s background and wish him peace in his new faith. Since we all will be affected by this we need to have open dialogue so families will continue to love and support each other in and out of the church. So thanks again for doing this!

  2. Jim!
For several years now, I have very much appreciated your efforts: ‘that faith might increase in the earth’. I think that is what you are achieving with all you share. You have certainly helped me and in turn, helped me to help others. Carry on please! Bill Reel is no real friend of yours: he has his own agenda which massively skews how he has chosen to process your responses. You have done no harm or disservice to the Church or to God. Quite the opposite.Plod on, m’dear!

  3. Don’t let it get you down, Jim.

Bill’s podcasts are transparently NOT about understanding or dialogue. They are about trying to reinforce Bill’s view of the Church. It’s playing “gotcha,” no matter how politely or kindly phrased.

This is a good example why such talks are often unhelpful–at BEST, you and the Church will come out exactly where you were when it started. You “hold your own.”

Why? Because you/the Church are constantly on the defensive; any “points” scored against you will be spun as a “victory.” The podcast host doesn’t have to justify or defend their own stance; it is assumed as the starting point.

It’s obvious for any listener that Bill tries (whether consciously or not) to get you to say things in a certain way that better serve his purposes. This is not about “understanding” (save as the posture or pose of “understanding” can be used for an essentially polemical purpose).

Bill has long tried to ape John Dehlin in this field. John’s much better at it than Bill is, but it’s the same dynamic. (Which is why John has been far more successful than Bill.)

Both also seem utterly incapable of learning anything from their podcast guests–which isn’t surprising when you realize that “learning” isn’t the point: self-justification and self-validation is (of host and sympathetic audience), with a stance of “I’m just asking questions.”

As someone once said, Bill’s podcast is essentially “Diet Mormon Stories.”

I would have said “Mormon Stories Zero,” but you get the idea. 🙂

Chin up, any honest listener will get where you’re coming from. Your CES Letter work makes you a threat, and your lack of guile made you vulnerable to agenda-pushers putting words in your mouth.

But there are far worse problems than lack of guile. 😉

  4. Greg nailed it. You were set up to fail.

The Savior’s words, as discussed in this week’s Come Follow Me lesson, are especially poignant in moment’s like this:

“Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

    But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.”

Two thousand years on, the Savior’s doctrine remains poignant and as difficult as ever to follow, but you exemplified it. You will be happier for having reached out in love to an enemy who was out to use you to further his work of destroying faith.

  5. Jim I really appreciate your willingness to share the material you’ve written, it’s extremely well done and thought provoking and yes faith building. I’ve no doubt you have helped many in regards to their faith and concerns. God bless.
