1 thought on “How to Build Resilient Faith

  1. Last Sunday I was dutifully going through “Come, Follow Me,” and read over some of the comments in it for 2 Nephi 2:22-29: “Lehi’s teachings about the Fall reveal why it was a necessary part of the Father’s plan for our eternal progression. As you read these verses, look for why the Fall needed to happen in order for us—Heavenly Father’s children—to progress. How did the Savior’s atoning sacrifice redeem us from the Fall?” To me this teaches that a Fall needed to happen in order for us to progress.

Then I noticed a “see also” link for “Fall of Adam and Eve” (a gospel topic entry on the church website), so I went there to “see also” more info. As I read through it, I noticed this: “In other words, they [Adam and Eve] experienced spiritual death. They also became mortal—subject to physical death. This spiritual and physical death is called the Fall.”

Further on I read, “In addition to introducing physical and spiritual death, it gave us the opportunity to be born on the earth.” So I concluded that the fall introduced death and gave us opportunity to be born.

Then I read the quotations from Lehi found in 2 Nephi 2:22-26, which stated: “And [Adam and Eve] would have had no children” and “Adam fell that men might be.”

Then Moses 5:10-11 was quoted, with Eve declaring: “Were it not for our transgression we never should have had seed.”

So much scriptural text and approved commentary teaching the doctrine that before the fall Adam and Eve were not mortal—as part of the fall they had to become such—and had to fall to have seed and for their children/descendants to be born.

I like to think I can read and understand the plain meaning of words. What I cannot find anywhere in the scriptural text and this church-approved gospel topic entry is how evolution (or God directing evolution) could provide for Adam and Eve to change into a state in which they had to fall to be able to have seed, or children, so “that men might be.”

I therefore reason that since no such teachings are in the scriptures or church approved manuals, the notion that evolution created Adam and Eve in a state in which they could not have children and had to fall must therefore be someone’s theory. I surmise I am to understand that somebody has made up a way for God to use evolution to create Adam and Eve so that they would have to fall (introduce physical and spiritual death) before they could have posterity. Such reflection brought to mind D&C 46:7, “that ye may not be seduced by . . . the commandments of men; for some are of men, and others of devils.”

I then thought of President Russell M. Nelson’s repeated teachings, twice in General Conference and once at BYU, in strong opposition to the teaching that God created Adam and Even using evolution, and in perfect harmony with the gospel topic entry and “Come, Follow Me” and I knew what the truth was. I think this course is having resilient faith and the spirit of discernment.
