  1. I’ve struggled with the Word of Wisdom in the past, wondering why we would condemn ourselves for drinking alcohol when the Savior Himself drank alcohol. The idea that we’re not sinning by drinking alcohol but by breaking a covenant makes a lot of sense to me and is something that has helped me to better understand the doctrine.

Thank you for this ray of light shining in the darkness of my mind.

  2. Well done Sarah. I might add one point to the last section: the “reinterpreted” wasn’t done “to change the original intent.” The purposes of subsequent reinterpretations have been for clarification and application to changed circumstances. The original intent remains the same: health and obedience. We can quibble around the edges but if you obey the Word of Wisdom you will be physically healthier than if you don’t, and you will gain spiritual blessings from the obedience.

  3. Sarah, thank you for, (as others have said) doing the heavy lifting in your response to the LTMW series. Very insightful and encouraging. Your ability to see through the haze is impressive and needed. I first encountered a slew of anti mormon literature while on my youthful mission in Los Angeles. While doing my laundry at a laundry mat, I noticed a treasure trove of small pamphlets left on the racks. Fortunately I had just finished reading Nibly’s marvelous book “Tinkling Symbols and Sounding Brass” which armed me when I encountered the anti-pamphlets. As I read through your responses, I feel like I am reading a graduate assistant to Hugh B. Nibley. That is the highest compliment I can think of. Well done Sarah.

  4. @Blaine and @Dave, thank you both for the kind words and the thoughtful posts!

@John, that is one of the very best compliments I have ever received. I’m a big fan of Hugh Nibley, and I’m humbled and flattered by the comparison. Thank you, truly.
